The Legacy of .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO
The .223 Remington was developed in 1957 by Remington Arms and Fairchild Industries as part of a military project to create a small caliber, high velocity rifle cartridge. In 1963, the U.S. Army officially accepted the cartridge as the 5.56mm ball M193. The following year, the military adopted the AR-15 as the M16 rifle.
Both cartridges share similar external dimensions but differ in chamber pressure. The 5.56 NATO operates at higher pressures than the .223 Remington. Rifles chambered in 5.56 can safely fire .223 rounds. However, firing 5.56 in a .223 chamber may cause pressure issues.
Today these bullets remain popular for:
- Target shooting: Affordable practice and competition
- Varmint control: Flat trajectory and accuracy
- Home defense: Reliable AR-15 platform compatibility
- Recreational shooting: High-volume range sessions
Versatility of Berry’s .223/5.56 Bullets
Berry’s .223/5.56mm full metal jacket boat tail bullets excel across diverse shooting scenarios. Selecting the appropriate grain bullets and bullet weight for your twist rate barrel promotes excellent stability throughout flight. These diameter projectiles accommodate higher pressure NATO specifications while producing reliable outcomes at both short range and long range.
The boat tail configuration minimizes drag and improves accuracy at extended distances. This makes these projectiles ideal for precision work. When loaded in 5.56 NATO ammo or .223 Remington brass, our bullets maintain steady chamber pressure and deliver consistent results in any rifle.
The full metal jacket design means these heavier projectiles handle the elevated fps required for flat shooting without structural compromise. Compared to lighter bullets, the 62 grain offers improved stability for the recreational shooter and competitive marksman alike.
Our Traditional Jacketing Process
- Cutting and Swaging the Core: Each bullet begins with a precisely cut segment of lead. We swage the lead core under substantial pressure, forming a uniform shape that establishes a stable foundation for the jacket.
- Drawing the Copper Jacket: A copper jacket is drawn and formed around the swaged core using traditional jacketing methods. This creates a high quality outer shell that reduces barrel fouling and supports performance with smokeless powder.
- Forming the Full Metal Jacket: The jacket is shaped to fully encapsulate the core, producing the classic full metal jacket boat tail profile. This design decreases drag and improves stability for bolt gun applications and precision shooting.
- Final Inspection and Quality Check: Before packaging, every bullet undergoes inspection to verify weight, dimensions, and jacket integrity. The result is a consistent, reliable projectile trusted for reloading applications.
