  1. Bigfoot45

Just received my bullet puller today and it couldn’t have been easier to pull an entire batch of 45 ACP rounds. Worked perfectly from the very get go. Note: You do not have to slam it down like you’re trying to hammer a 10 penny nail, a firm tap or two will suffice.

What is an Inertia Puller?

An inertia puller, also called a kinetic hammer or hammer puller, is a reloading tool that pulls a bullet from a loaded round using nothing but a quick strike. You thread the cartridge into a collet, cap it, and tap the puller against a hard surface. The sudden stop drives the heavier case backward while inertia keeps the bullet moving, and the two separate cleanly.

That is the easiest way to break down a round without a press. Because nothing grips the bearing surface of the bullet, the hammer-type design leaves the projectile unmarked and ready to reuse. Berry’s Superior Kinetic Bullet Puller works across a wide range of calibers with its supplied collet system, which makes it a versatile pick for any bench.

How to Use Our Kinetic Bullet Puller

Using Berry’s kinetic hammer puller is straightforward.

  1. Select the right collet. Match the color-coded bullet puller collet to your caliber:
    • Black (X-Small): small pistol and small rifle calibers
    • Blue (Small): .32 to .380 and .17 Rem to .223 Rem
    • Green (Large): 9mm to 10mm and 6mm to 8mm
    • Red (X-Large): .41 to .45 ACP and belted magnums up to 45-70
  2. Load the cartridge. Insert the round into the collet and secure it by threading the cap on tightly.
  3. Strike. Hold the puller by its rubberized grip and tap the cap against a hard surface like a concrete floor or a bench. As one owner noted, you do not need to slam it like a nail; a firm tap or two will dislodge the bullet and powder charge.
  4. Empty and repeat. Remove the components and go again as needed.

The rubber insert keeps a round nose, a flat point, or any other profile from marring against the base, so your pulled lead bullets and plated bullets stay true to their bullet diameter.

When You Need a Bullet Puller

Every reloader needs a standard bullet puller on the bench sooner or later. A bullet puller earns its keep the moment something goes wrong, or you want to reclaim materials:

  • Fix a mistake: A wrong powder charge, a bad seating depth, or the wrong bullet seated in the case. Instead of scrapping the round, you pull bullets and reload the components.
  • Salvage components: Break down old or surplus ammo to reclaim usable brass, powder, and bullets.
  • Check your work: Pull a round from a new batch to confirm your charge weight and seating depth are on spec.

For any of these, a kinetic bullet puller is the simplest answer, since it needs no press and no setup beyond picking the right collet.
