We redesigned our .45-70 bullet with an improved profile to ensure a more universal fit across all .45-70 firearms. Berry’s Superior Plated Bullets® begin with a swaged lead core that is electroplated with copper to its final weight, fully encapsulating the core and eliminating lead exposure. Each bullet is then re-struck to precise specifications for a strong bond and consistent dimensions. The result is a clean-shooting, indoor-range-safe bullet that delivers reliable accuracy shot after shot.

  • Bullet O.A.L.: .864"
  • Cartridge Name: 45-70 Government
  • Cartridge O.A.L.: 2.550"
  • Max Velocity: 1950 fps
  • Load data for our Superior Plated Bullets® can be found in any manual or on any powder manufacturer’s website.
  • Cast or jacketed data with the same grain weight and profile will work with our bullets.
  • You can use a taper or a roll crimp.
  • Don’t over crimp the brass after seating. This causes bullet core separation, leading to increased copper fouling and accuracy issues.
  • Don’t exceed the recommended maximum velocities listed. This creates bullet core separation and accuracy issues.

Universal .45-70 Government Bullet Design

Our .45-70 Government 350 grain bullet was redesigned with an improved profile for a reliable fit across a wide range of firearms. This updated diameter bullet profile supports consistent seating in platforms ranging from vintage Springfield Model era rifles to modern designs.

The bullet performs reliably in single-shot rifles, lever-action rifles, and traditional lever guns, including popular Marlin platforms. Its geometry supports proper alignment across common twist rate variations found in .45-70 rifle chambers. The balanced bullet base design also promotes consistent departure from the muzzle for tighter groups.

Designed for flexibility, this bullet works with both black powder and smokeless powder. Reloaders using grains of black powder in traditional loads or building high velocity smokeless recipes can tailor performance across different power levels while maintaining excellent accuracy.

45-70 Bullets: Common Use Cases

Recreational Shooting

Well-suited for range work and load development, this bullet delivers excellent accuracy at typical distances measured in yards. Whether testing muzzle velocity at the chronograph or grouping at a half inch or tighter, it provides repeatable results for consistent practice.

Historical & Traditional Rifles

The .45-70 is one of the oldest cartridges still in regular use in the United States, first adopted with the Springfield Model 1873. This bullet works well in classic single-shot and lever action designs

Hunting-Oriented Loads

While not designed as a dedicated hunting bullet, this projectile is often used by shooters developing big game loads for the .45-70 rifle. At appropriate velocity and fps levels, the 350-grain heavy bullet offers predictable behavior. The plated profile may also offer a flatter trajectory than a traditional lead bullet or cast bullet at the same weight at longer range distances, though results vary based on load development and terminal performance factors.

45-70 Reloading Guide

Berry’s Superior Plated bullets are designed for straightforward reloading using published load data. Reloaders can reference reloading manuals or powder manufacturer data for cast bullets or jacketed bullets of the same grain bullet weight and profile.

  • Use a taper or roll crimp at the case mouth
  • Avoid over-crimping, especially with shorter cases, as this can cause core separation
  • Do not exceed recommended powder charge, velocity, or higher pressure limits
  • Avoid compressed load configurations that push beyond published maximums
  • Proper load development improves accuracy and consistency

Always confirm data based on case length, brass, primer choice, and powder type before approaching maximum power level. Reference your front sight alignment and confirm zero after any load changes.

Why Choose Berry’s Bullets?

Each bullet begins with a swaged lead core and is electroplated with copper to its final weight, fully encapsulating the core and eliminating exposed lead. After plating, bullets are re-struck to precise specifications for uniform diameter and strong core-to-jacket bonding.

Compared to traditional cast bullets, this construction helps reduce fouling while maintaining accuracy. When loaded into a properly assembled 45-70 Government cartridge, shooters can expect reliable performance and consistent results shot after shot. The 45-70 govt round remains one of America’s most trusted cartridge platforms, and Berry’s Superior Plated Bullets® are built to match that legacy.
