The .44 Magnum caliber was developed by Elmer Keith in the 1950s through experimental handloading of the .44 Special. Keith pushed beyond standard loads with heavier bullets and new powder charges. His work led Remington and Smith & Wesson to chamber revolvers for .44 Magnum in 1956, with the 240 gr bullet becoming the standard weight.
This bullet weight works in revolvers with 4-inch to 6-inch barrels and lever-action mag rifles. You can load mild target loads for practice, or build a magnum load for hunting. Recently decided to load the 44/240 FP bullets in 44 Spc and take my Ruger Super Blackhawk out of mothballs. Due to old age and severe arthritis, I could no longer tolerate heavy recoil of the 44 Mag and had not fired my gun for several years. With a load of 6.2 grns of CFE Pistol at approximately 850 fps, I am again enjoying big bore plinking without the pain. These bullets shoot better than I can and the quality is above reproach. “Try it, you’ll like it.”
